3 dead in Canadian waterfall plunge involving YouTube travel vloggers
A pair of Canadian travel vloggers died Tuesday in a waterfall accident that also claimed the life of one of the men’s girlfriends.
Ryker Gamble and Alexey Lyakh of the popular YouTube travel collective High on Life SundayFundayz died alongside Lyakh’s girlfriend Megan Scraper after falling down Shannon Falls, the third-highest waterfall in British Columbia.
Cpl. Sascha Banks of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said three adults were swimming in a pool atop the waterfall when they slipped and tumbled nearly 100 feet down into a lower pool.
Police were forced to call in search and rescue teams and helicopter units in order to recover the bodies, as the “extremely difficult” and “very dangerous” terrain combined with a heavy water flow made for a risky recovery effort.
Scraper initially slipped and fell, and Lyakh and Gamble were swept away in their attempts to save her, according to the Vancouver Sun.
They were identified in local media reports and on social media.
High on Life SundayFundayz, formed by Gamble, Lyakh and high school friend Parker Heuser, is a collective of avid travelers who track their adventures across continents on social media.
The group — which has nearly 500,000 YouTube subscribers and boasts 1.1 million Instagram followers — has been sharing videos since 2011, and has documented trips to countries like Bali, Spain, Italy, Croatia, Argentina, Peru, Thailand and Hungary.
“We post weekly videos to inspire our viewers to get out and explore the world,” the group’s Facebook page reads.
Both Gamble and Lyakh — along with pal Justis Price Brown — made headlines in 2016 for leaving a designated trail at Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming to film atop the protected Grand Prismatic Spring.
All three pleaded guilty to charges including disorderly conduct, commercial photography without a permit and the use of a drone. Gamble and Lyakh were ordered to pay $5,000 each in fines, and both served a week in jail.
"When standing at the face of such natural wonder, we were drawn to it," they later apologized. "In an attempt to get the perfect shot, we acted in a way that doesn’t reflect our respect for the environment we were trying to capture.”
Tributes by devastated fans have continued to pour in across the group’s social media channels.
“These three lived harder and saw more than most see in a lifetime,” one fan wrote on Instagram. “They also inspired so many of us to travel and pursue our dreams. My heart goes out to all of you.”
FIBA Under-17 World Cup: Batang Gilas comes up short in loss to Argentina
The Philippines boys national team lost a tightly contested game to host Argentina 74-71 in the FIBA Under-17 World Cup at Newell’s Old Boys in Rosario city on Tuesday (Wednesday, Manila time).
Batang Gilas thus enters the round of 16 having lost all 3 of its group-stage games.
The Filipinos next play undefeated Canada, winners of Group C and ranked No. 2 in the world, during the crossover, knockout phase on Wednesday.
After losing back-to-back games via blowout, Batang Gilas gave world No. 8 Argentina everything it could handle.
Down by as many 11 points, the Philippines patiently whittled down the deficit and eventually took the driver’s seat 54-52 late in the third quarter on Carl Tamayo’s layup.
Argentina went ahead again 61-56, but an 8-0 run capped by Terrence John Fortea’s 3-pointer made it 64-61 with 7:15 left in the game.
But a series of sloppy plays by Batang Gilas allowed Argentina to go in front 74-68.
Still, the visitors had a chance to pull off an upset.
Fortea drilled another 3-pointer to make it 74-71, 21 seconds to go, but the Philippines’ comeback fell short after 3 successive misses from downtown.
Fortea finished with 17 points and 5 3-pointers, while Gerry Abadiano added 17 points of his own.

MANILA -- Filipinos will soon be able to fly direct to Sapporo from Manila.
On Thursday, Philippine Airlines formally announced its newest flight to Sapporo, the largest city in the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.
Currently, Manila-based travelers need to make a stop at either Tokyo or Osaka to get to Sapporo either by plane or bullet train.
Sapporo is considered an ideal gateway to Hokkaido, which is dubbed as “Japan’s last frontier” because of its abundant natural beauty.

New Knicks coach already planning for Porzingis return
LOS ANGELES - The New York Knicks still don't know when Kristaps Porzingis will return from a torn left knee ligament, but new coach David Fizdale already has plans for the tall, talented Latvian.
"It really is a luxury for me to have a guy that I can move around at different positions," Fizdale told reporters at summer league practice in Las Vegas on Thursday.
"I just see a lot of places I can use him to be dynamic for us," Fizdale said, according to Newsday.
Fizdale said he could play Porzingis at center, but could also use the 7-foot-3-inch Porzingis at small forward occasionally in a lineup that would give the Knicks "a whole bunch of wingspan."
Fizdale said he would travel to Latvia after summer league play ends to get to know his star.
"He's going to get tired of me but about two of those days over there we're going to watch film in Latvia because I got so much stuff I've broken down and pulled," Fizdale said.
"Stuff that Jeff (Hornacek) was already doing from the year before. Stuff that was similar where I can show him from his own film, 'Hey I'm going to use you this way' or 'I'm going to use you this way.'"

Fizdale, sacked by the Memphis Grizzlies last November, was hired by the Knicks in May after they missed the NBA playoffs for a fifth straight season.
He took over from Hornacek, who was fired at the conclusion of the Knicks 29-53 campaign.
Porzingis was already on the sidelines by then, after injuring his left knee when he landed after a dunk in a game against the Milwaukee Bucks in February.
He was averaging just under 23 points per game with 6.7 rebounds and 2.4 blocked shots and had been due to play in the All-Star Game.
